Ah, I am not alone. Greg Kot, writing for the Chicago Tribune, also found Death Cab’s new album to be full of surprises. I feel less silly about it now that someone in a position of authority feels the same way.

I’ve resisted Death Cab for Cutie for some time now. Nothing personal, they just weren’t producing a sound that I was interested in, but their newest album, Narrow Stairs, has completely consumed me.
I just prefer the indie sound when it goes dark and heavy.
